Charlotte pollen has wrecked me every spring since I moved here. They put in a MERV 13 cabinet and sealed the return ducts in the crawl space. This was the first season I could sleep through the night.

From $320 for most filtration upgrades
Charlotte's pollen counts rank among the worst in the country, and the humidity runs high most of the year. Both are solvable, and neither needs the most expensive box on the shelf.
The short answer
Indoor air quality upgrades in Charlotte range from $320 for a media filter cabinet to about $2,400 for a whole-home system. For pollen season specifically, a MERV 13 media filter with sealed return ducts does more than most standalone air purifiers.

A good whole-home filter does. Standalone room purifiers help in one room. The bigger win for most homes here is sealing return duct leaks, because unfiltered crawl space or attic air pulled into the system undoes everything the filter is doing.
Usually an oversized system. It cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out. That is a sizing problem, not a filter problem, and it is extremely common around Lake Norman.
It becomes one. Mecklenburg red clay holds moisture against the foundation, crawl spaces stay damp, and any return duct leaking down there pulls that air into the house. Sealing the ducts is the first move, and encapsulation is worth discussing if it keeps recurring.

Our 2020 build was constantly humid despite the AC running nonstop. Turned out to be an oversized system, exactly as they suspected before even coming out. Added a dehumidifier and the difference is night and day.

Good product and clear explanation of what would and would not help. They talked me out of a UV system I had been planning to buy, which cost them a sale. Four stars only because scheduling the follow-up took a couple of calls.
