Heat Pump Installation and Repair in Charlotte

Heat pumps are the default here, not the alternative. The question worth asking is not whether one works in North Carolina, it is whether your backup heat was sized for an actual ice storm.

The short answer

Heat pumps cost $5,600 to $13,000 installed in Charlotte and are the standard system across the Carolinas. Their weakness is a sustained freeze, which is why correctly sized backup heat matters here more than the heat pump's own rating.

Questions we get

Will a heat pump keep up in an ice storm?

Not on its own below about 35 degrees, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling. Output drops as it gets colder and the backup heat carries more of the load. The real question is whether your backup was sized for a genuine Carolina cold snap rather than a mild one, and that is a calculation rather than an opinion.

Why does my heat pump blow cool air sometimes?

That is the defrost cycle and it is normal. The unit briefly reverses to melt frost off the outdoor coil, steam comes off it, and the indoor air goes cool for a few minutes. It lasts a few minutes. We get called out for this every winter and we do not charge for the visit when that is all it is.

Is dual fuel worth it in Charlotte?

Often yes. A dual-fuel setup runs the heat pump in mild weather, which is most of our winter, and switches to gas when it gets cold enough that the heat pump loses efficiency. It also takes strain off the electrical panel, which matters in older homes still on 100 amp service.

Clarence Boyd

Asked them directly whether a heat pump would keep up in a proper ice storm. The tech said no, not on its own, and then walked me through sizing the backup heat properly. First HVAC person who did not just tell me what I wanted to hear.

Ezra Blumberg

My heat pump was blowing cool air in winter and I was convinced it was broken. Tech explained the defrost cycle, showed me what it looks like, and charged me nothing for the visit. Told me to call back if it did anything different. It never did.

Arthur Pemberton

Dual fuel setup and it has been flawless through a full year now. They sized the backup heat for a real freeze, not a mild one.

Your AC quit. Cold air by tonight.

Two ways to start. Pick whichever suits the state you are in right now.
